Know How Lucky You Are – Fairford Mill
Tip 59 – Know How Lucky You Are.
There has been a mill on this spot from time immemorial, one of three mills within the manor of Fairford since 1066 and mentioned in the Domesday book.
In 1296 the site included a fulling mill but by 1307 there were only corn mills.
Set in an idyllic location beside the river Coln the mill remains as peaceful today as it ever was despite the occasional tourist traffic.
With fat trout swimming in the mill pond, an abundance of ducks and swans, cattle relaxing in the adjacent field and Fairford church St Mary’s, with its world famous stained glass windows (Fairford Parish Church: A Medieval Church and Its Stained Glass Stained Glass – book) as a backdrop, this is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all.
This wonderful spot serves to remind us of just how beautiful the Cotswolds can be in summer and how all of us should make the time to appreciate the richness of nature and our cultural heritage.
